Consultation

Marcia Sikes, DHom

What Happens In A Consultation?

The initial consultation is a very thorough one to two hour interview. During this time you will be asked to describe in your own way, and as fully as possible, the conditions which bother you. The homeopath will want to know a time-line of your medical history and your family health history.

It is very important for the homeopath to know what makes your complaint better or worse. For example, does your condition vary with the time of day or night, or with the seasons? How do temperature, weather, eating, affect your condition? Anything that occurs with your symptoms is important. Do you feel nauseous with a headache, or does your skin clear up during menses?

In addition you will be asked questions about you in general, in order to understand such as:

  • When did your significant problem(s) begin, and what was going on is your life at the time?
  • Can you associate the onset of your condition with an emotionally trying time in your life, a prolonged or pronounced stress, injury, or surgery?
  • What have been the most upsetting times in your life?
  • How did you feel in your childhood?
  • What patterns and problems have been with you throughout your life?
  • What situations do find unbearable?
  • In which situations are you the most happy
  • Do you have recurrent thoughts or memories
  • What is most important to you?
  • What situations make you the most angry or fearful?

After collecting these (and other) important data, the homeopath will take time to study your case in order to determine the correct remedy matching your presented symptoms. Acute conditions such as fever, flu, headache, sprains, ear infections, etc., respond very quickly to homeopathic treatment, (usually within hours, sometimes within minutes). Chronic or long-term conditions require patience and considerable commitment. These diseases take a long time to develop, and depending on severity, can take several weeks to several months before significant improvements can be felt.

Treatment requires a considerable commitment from both the patient and the homeopath, especially when a chronic illness is being treated. The results are best when the patient records the changes they experience during the course of treatment, and reports them to the homeopath during each meeting.

Ultimately, homeopathy is a creative and holistic partnership between practitioner and patient, between symptoms and remedy. Together, we can, and will, find answers.
